History
Known as the king of “purple” strains, this bud is a legend no matter what name it chooses: Granddaddy Purple, Gridlock, Grand Daddy Purps, or GDP. This bud defines what it means to be an indica: heavy, smooth, and body-melting, it’s a mainstay in every dispensary and stoner stash.
Renowned far and wide, GDP is one of the most popular strains on the West Coast. It’s a cross of Purple Urkle and Big Bud, two 80s indicas known for their powerful body highs. Some people say that GDP shares a striking resemblance to Grape Ape, or that they might even be the same strain—but others say that there’s just confusion about the strains’ similar lineage and look. The jury’s still out on how close they really are!
In 2003, this strain was introduced to the California cannabis scene by Ken Estes himself—but you might know him better as the “Medicine Man.” Today a famous breeder, Ken Estes began his journey with cannabis after a motorcycle accident left him paralyzed from the waist down. As he delved into cannabis’s therapeutic properties, he became an activist for medical marijuana and founded the Granddaddy Purp Collective: an organization with a mission of helping people find comfort and relief through cannabis.
As a “purple” strain, GDP’s buds are a deep, rich violet accented with enticingly bright orange pistils and a frosting of trichomes. This bus is famous for its smell and taste: on the inhale, we’re hit with its signature aroma of grapes and sweet wild-berries.
RIFF’s offering of GDP is just what we’d want out of this legendary bud, and more—their Subway Scientist pre-roll even took home 1st place at the Canadian Cannabis Awards in 2019!
The Effects
Toke slow and steady with this strain. GDP is famous for its classic, super heavy indica effects, leaving you glued to your couch all evening long. With such a throwback high, we love to pair this bud with some trippy tunes—is tonight going to be a classic like Pink Floyd, or are we going to experiment with some King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard?
